Monteverro 2012, Decanter

The 2012 Monteverro offers a very dark and brooding profile, the darkest of all the wines I tasted in a vertical of the first 2008 vintage through the 2021 release, with consultant winemaker Jean Hoefliger in California in August 2024. It leads with blackberry, charcuterie, black liquorice, black cherry, smoky clove, dried herbs, and floral notes. Full-bodied with arresting robust tannins that are muscular in stature and build through the lengthy finish of crushed stones, more black fruit, and more peach pit, even grapefruit zest and dried orange peel and apple skin notes. There’s plenty of nuance and plenty of life left in this brooding wine.

Tinata 2012, Decanter

Drought conditions marked the 2012 season, and the wines possess excellent concentration. I tasted a vertical of the 2008-2021 vintages in August 2024. Indeed, 2012 bears the mark of deep concentration, showing a deep ruby in the glass and richly scented with black and red currants, plums, and a lifted sweetness balanced by the kind of density that comes from biting into soft, silky Bari dates. The tannins are incredibly compact and fine-grained here. White truffle, dried violets, white pepper, and zesty blood orange fuel the long finish.

Terra di Monteverro 2012, Vinous

The 2012 Terra di Monteverro offers plenty of depth and succulence in its up-front fruit and radiant, open-knit personality. Dark red cherry, plums, smoke, tobacco and licorice wrap around the fleshy, radiant finish. Drink this resonant, expressive Maremma red over the next few years. The Terra di Monteverro is a terrific introduction to the wines of the estate.

Very pretty cabernet sauvignon aromas and flavors to this with blackberry, blackcurrant and lemon undertones that follow through to a medium to full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Drink or hold.
